Snorkeller

Introduction

Before training commences the trainee must have completed the Fitness Assessment, signed a Declaration Form and completed a Medical Questionnaire. If trainees are under the age of 18 years the signature of a parent or guardian must be obtained. See notes on junior divers in SAA Club Guidance Manual.

Basic Assessment

  1. Sink basic equipment, recover and refit on surface and give O.K. signal.
  2. Fin 200 metres, surface dive every 25 metres and swim underwater.
  3. Demonstrate ability to establish positive buoyancy with ABLJ.
  4. Fin 100 metres wearing appropriate weight belt.
  5. Fin 50 metres face submerged breathing through snorkel and not wearing a mask.

Open Water Assessment

Before the open water assessment takes place all preceeding drills should have been completed to the satisfaction of the Diving Officer.

  1. Swim 500 metres neutrally buoyant.
  2. Surface dive and recover object.
  3. Attend two additional snorkel meetings.

Oral Examination

Students must satisfactorily complete an oral examination.

 
 

Advanced Snorkeller

Introduction

Before advanced snorkeller training commences all the criteria for snorkeller should have been completed to the satisfaction of the club diving officer of their competence to lead snorkelling activities.

Basic Assessment

  1. Tow a body for 50 metres giving A.V. at approved rate.
  2. Land body and continue A.V. Assistance may be sought. Explain after care.

Open Water Assessment

  1. During a snorkel dive demonstrate the rescue of a buddy. Swim 50 metres to where casualty is on the surface, unconcious and not breathing. Tow for 50 metres giving A.V. as approved. Land body and complete rescue, describe after care.
  2. Lead two additional snorkel dives. No more than two qualifying dives in any one day.

Oral Examination

Satisfactorily complete an oral examination.
